Prophetic Warning Drawn
from Matthew 24:12

Prophetically Significant
News Events

Introduction
by Pastor Douglas Shearer

     I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of Facing the Storm - and read it through very carefully. It's an exegesis of Matthew 24 and 25, Jesus' Olivet Discourse. It clearly distnguishes between (1) the false signs that do not herald the approach of the Tribulation, that instead are common to every epoch of human history, and (2) the authentic signs that most certainly do herald its approach. The false signs are spelled out from verse 4 to verse 6. The authentic signs are spelled out in verse 7 and called "birth pangs" in verse 8. The authentic signs include ...
  • a world war,
  • a global economic collapse,
  • global famine,
     The fragmentation of America into warring camps
is beyond anything we could have imagined thirty to
forty years ago - even ten to fifteen years ago. Cities
like Chicago, Baltimore, New York, and Los Angeles
are being torn apart by violence; but the violence is
not limited to those cities alone; it has spread to
cities and towns most of us thought were immune
to riots and street protests - cities and towns like Ferguson, Missouri; San Jose, California; and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
     I'm 75 years old - and remember well the violence of the 1960s and 70s. I was a student at UC Berkeley at the time. Back then, however, there was no real attempt to overthrow the Judeo-Christian ethic, the moral foundation of American culture. The social consensus that rested on that foundation had not yet been truly called into question.
     The protests in the 1960s and 70s were focused on specific, well defined governmental policies - especially Jim Crow laws and the War in Vietnam. I know; I was there!   Yes, postmodern relativism was beginning to nibble away at the margins of American culture, but that's all. It was pretty much restricted to the rarified heights of academia. The Judeo-Christian ethic emerged from the 1960s and 70s a little scarred, but largely intact.
     For most of us the so-called sexual revolution was more of a novelty than a common behavorial norm clothed in legitimacy. Divorce was still frowned upon; homosexuality was shameful; so-called "transgender rights" would have been thoroughly incomprehensible; rugged individualism still held sway for most Americans; and living off welfare was considered dishonorable. Most Americans were hard-working and preferred a government that was small and limited in its reach. No one felt "entitled." What we wanted had to be earned.
     It's the on-going and, I might add, wholly triumphant assault against the Judeo-Christian ethic that makes the protests and violence of today so much different from the protests and violence of the 1960s and 70s.
     The ever-mounting ascendancy of "progressive thought" and "progressive values" is reflected in the protests depicted in the videos I've included on this page.

  • global epidemics, and, finally,
  • a series of catastrophic natural disasters occurring throughtout the world.
     How exactly those signs are derived from Matthew 24:7 is very carefully explained in Facing the Storm.
     Verse 9 marks the beginning of the Tribulation - with the events spelled out from verse 9 through verse 15 describing events that will occur during its entire seven year span of time. Those events, however, will not occur suddenly and unexpectedly. A precursor of each event will become increasingly obvious during the lead-up to the Tribulation, the "Birth Pangs Era." There are at least nine precursors:

  • ever-increasing immorality;
  • ever-increasing anti-Christian bias and the marginalization of faithful believers;
  • the separation of faithful believers from unfaithful believers;
  • rampant apostasy within the church;
  • on-going military tension and outright war in the Middle East;
  • ever-increasing anti-Zionism;
  • ever increasing anti-Semitism;
  • an ever-increasing breakdown of the social order leading to political paralysis and chaos;
  • ever-increasing lawlessness, violence, and terror.

Tolerance and Inclusion
The Riots in Sacramento

     June 26, 2016: a particularly violent riot broke out at the state capital building in Sacramento. It pitted right wing extemists opposed to globalization and open-boarders immigration against extreme left wing groups composed of gay rights organizations and anarchists. The right wing goups were outnumbered almost ten to one - with over four hundred persons caught up in the melee.
     The violence was especially savage - with ten persons hospitalized for serious stabbing wounds. What's so clearly revealed here is the ever growing dominance of the left-wing progressives - who are not averse to the use of violence and who repudiate any limits on their personal freedom.
     The video here does not back away from displaying the violence that broke out at the rally. Is it any wonder that many believers think the best option is to "hunker down" and not "rock the boat"? Any believer who refuses to play down the egregious nature of sin or who stubbornly insists that Christ alone is the way to salvation runs the risk of eventually being labeled a Nazi - and, therefore, subject to the same savage assaults so clearly depicted in this video clip. And bear in mind that this riot occurred in Sacramento, California - a community most of us would never consider a venue for this kind of protest. No, this level of violent enmity is knocking at the front door of every church in America. Still, pastors turn a blind eye to it - and, in doing so, fail to prepare their congregations adequately - how to remain faithful in a world that is becoming openly hostile to the Christian Faith.

Focus on Lawlessness and Violence in End Days Prophecy

Matthew 24:12

And because lawlessness will abound ...
Matthew 24:12a

     The lawlessness mentioned in Matthew 24:12a will not reach its consummated fullness until the on-set of the Tribulation - the beginning of which is marked by Matthew 24:9. (See Facing the Storm for further elaboration.) However. precursors of that lawlessness will become increasingly obvious to everyone during the "Birth Pangs" era, the lead-up to the Tribulation.
     The word "lawlessness" ("ἀνομία") can also be translated "iniquity," "wickedness," or "unrighteousness." Moreover, the Greek word translated "abound" ("πληθύνω") means "multiplied." In short, what we're talking about here is a total collapse of all ethical norms.
     Finally, scripture makes it clear that wickedness goes hand-in-hand with violence; for example, Genesis 6:11 ...

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
Genesis 6:11

Clearly, the word "corrupt" implies "evil" and "wickedness." The same correlation is found in many other verses; for example ...

The mouth of the righteous is a well of life,
But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
   Proverbs 10:11

The violence of the wicked will destroy them,
Because they refuse to do justice.
Proverbs 21:7

As a fountain wells up with water,
So she wells up with her wickedness.
Violence and plundering are heard in her.
Before Me continually are grief and wounds.
   Jeremiah 6:7

The Occupy Movement
Entitlement

     The riots that broke out in Sacramento revolve around the two virtues of postmodern relativism: (1) tolerance and (2) inclusion. The "Occupy Wall Street" Movemnt, on the other hand, revolved more around "entitlement" - a belief that life itself - the mere fact of "being" - entitles a person to a range of material benefits that past generations insisted should be earned. It reflects a flat-out repudiation of the principles of "hard work" and merit, both of which are rooted in the Judeo-Christian ethic. Once again, violence is the salient feature of these riots - and reflects just how intense that repudiation has become.
     It's a serious mistake to assume that the Occupy Wall Street Movement has dissipated. Not at all. It has been fully coopted by the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party - and is even now breaking into the party as a whole.
